2018-01-26. Winter Conferment Ceremony (vinterpromotionen)
Time: Friday 26 Jan. 2018 at 12..00–circa 15.00
Place:
Uppsala University's main building (Universitetshuset), the Aula.
Some pieces of information for you who plan to attend:
Nota bene, at this conferment ceremony Johan Heilbron will say nothing and he will by only one in the crowd of young doctors, honorary doctors and laureates. Thus, if you wish to meet with and listen to him there are other occasions earlier this week, see above.
Johan Heilbron will as the other doctores honoris causa climb the parnassus, be greeted by the promotors and given their insignia (the laurel wreath, the golden ring, the diploma hand-written in Latin; in Johan's case the promotor will be Mikael Börjesson). On this occasion also a large number of so called "young" (which has nothing to do with biological age) promovendi will receive their dignity. It is a solemn ceremony, three hours, with orations in Latin, half a symphony orchestra on the stage, cannon salutes etcetera. Those of you who are affiliated with Uppsala University as teachers, researchers, doctorate candidates, alumni or emeriti etcetera are welcome to walk in the academic procession, which gathers at 11:45 on the second floor of the entrance hall. No pre-registration, just come. For male participants in the procession the dress code is "frack" (habit de cérémonie, penguin style) with black (not white!) vest and white bowtie. Female procession participants are supposed to wear full-length gown, all colours allowed, no shoulders visible; if your gown is without sleeves hide the shoulders with a jacket or a silk scarf or something. No dress code for the audience that does not go in the procession - casual clothing is okay, and the seats must have been taken no later than 12:00. Procession participants do not need a ticket but the rest of the audience should have a ticket (free of charge), ordered in advance or picked up at the reception desk immediately to the right of the main entrance doors.

2018-03-22. Conference
Sciences Po, 98 rue de l'Université, Paris, April 12–13, 2018
Organisers: University of Bergen, Uppsala University, the Norwegian University Centre in Paris, and Sciences Po, Paris.
Convenor: Mikael Börjesson
Language: English
The conference deals with the transformations during the last three decades of higher education in the Nordic countries. Presentations and discussions will be based on recent research on organisational aspects and student recruitment patterns, as well as the interplay between the two. Recruitment patterns offer a key to understanding the effects of restructuring in national systems of higher education, as changes in such patterns over time provide us with indicators of changing valorisations of higher education programs, fields and types of study, and institutions. Analysing recruitment patterns also makes it possible to evaluate the function of higher education in relation to the welfare state, evidencing the role it plays in democratic goals related to equity. Results from research in the Nordic countries will be related to recent trends in France and other European countries. The conference contains four keynotes and eight thematic sessions.

Abstract
There is a common trend for formerly tuition-free countries to introduce tuition fees for international students. This development causes concerns over the future nature of universities in regards to conflicting priorities between growing market-orientation, access to higher education and academic freedom. The general purpose of my research project is to understand how universities adapt as organizations to such a potentially threatening shift in policy. How do they manage potentially competing priorities between academia and business? The focus of my research is the case of Sweden, since tuition fees were introduced within the last ten years (2011/12), which is a long enough period for one to be able to detect profounder changes on an organizational level. The main research questions are: A) What were the consequences of the policy shift for Swedish universities? B) How did the investigated universities adapt over time to the new situation and why? C) What do the key protagonists believe were the effects of those adaptations? The answer to these questions are to be found by conducting case studies of individual Swedish universities, focusing on how the adaptation process materialized since the policy shift. The case studies are based on data received through interviews and further triangulation with other sources such as internal documents.

2018-10-24. Public guest lecture and discussion
M. Roger Chartier, Collège de France, Paris
Time: Wednesday Oct 24th, 2018, at 14.15-16.30
Place: Auditorium Minus, Gustavianum, Uppsala (Gustavianum is the 17th Centrury building with the spectacular anatomic theatre well visible on the roof, next to the entrance to the cathedral. Street address Akademigatan 3. The Auditorium Minus is the hall on the second floor. )
Language: English
Professor Chartier is since 2007 holding the chair "Écrit et cultures dans l’Europe moderne" (Writings and Cultures in Modern Europe) at Collège de France. He is an historian by training, agrégé in 1969. Since the 1970s he has been a central representative of what was at that time called la nouvelle histoire, i.e. the third generation of the Annales school, emphasising the history of culture, mentalities and representations. His main institutional platform was for many years the Centre de Recherches Historiques at l’École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, where he has since the 1980s served as Directeur d’Études (research director, to be compared to a full professorship). This centre, directed by M. Chartier 1982–1984, is one of the world’s largest and most well recognised historical research milieus and the main institutional basis for the Annales school, which has exerted a most significant worldwide influence not only within the historical disciplines in a narrow sense but also within many other branches of the humanities and social sciences. For further information on M. Chartier’s CV see https://www.college-de-france.fr/site/roger-chartier/.
M. Chartier’s own research covers vast domains of social and cultural history – see the remarkable publication list at
https://www.college-de-france.fr/site/roger-chartier/bibliographie.htm – but a centre of gravity has been his works on the social and cultural history of printed publications and of reading during different ages, from the early modern age up until today. His focus of attention has not been books and other publications as such but rather the readers’ responsiveness to the written word, i.e. the transformations of their perception and reception abilities in different historical situations and different social circumstances. Thus, M. Chartier is an eminent historian of the kind that that stands for a decisively sociological orientation.
For more information on M. Chartier's sojourn contact Donald Broady <donald.broady@soc.uu.se>, who will act as his host during the events organised by the Department of sociology. Other events will be hosted by the Department of Modern Languages.

2018-11-05. Konstsociologiskt seminarium
Laura E. Braden, Erasmus University, Rotterdam
Time: Monday 5 Nov at 10-12
Place: Room PC 249, Södertörns högskola
Language: English

Abstract:
While primarily concerned with developments in the 1950s United States, this analysis begins by reexamining the historiography of IQ and intelligence testing in the first half of the 20th century, indicating as it does so an emergent emphasis on the individualization of “intelligence” in the Stanford/Iowa IQ debates of the 1930s. Given the character and tendency of this trend, I propose a model for understanding these developments: one which situates conceptions of racial and individual "intelligence” as entangled and co-evolving ideologies. With this historiographical model in place I turn to evidence from National Defense Education Act (NDEA) hearings from 1958, and related NDEA-era texts. These documents demonstrate that NDEA reforms attempted to rehabilitate testing as fair and “race”-neutral, and were further structured around the logics of individual “ability.” While NDEA reforms asserted that such individualization of educational opportunity was a scientifically objective, “race”-neutral process, discourse analysis reveals that it was instead profoundly entangled with the logics of “race” and a history — indeed a present — from which it imagined it had cut itself loose.
