Staf Callewaert had a professorship in Pedagogy at University of Copenhagen for 22 years before he retired. His scientific perspective is influenced by Bourdieu and much of his work has been carried out in Africa. Staf is at present keeping a critical eye on the transformation of the educational field - a transformation that is led by private foundations and corporate financial interests in the United States and duplicated worldwide by institutions like the World Bank, OECD, and IMF.

Correspondence Analysis and Related Methods - CARME 2011

CARME 2011 is the sixth in a series of conferences on multidimensional graphical techniques and the analysis of large sets of categorical data. It celebrates the 50th anniversary of correspondence analysis (CA) and will take place in Rennes (France) f8-11 February 2011 at :

This 6th edition of CARME will be a major event for all those interested in correspondence analysis and multivariate exploratory analysis in general. Indeed, this edition will take place in Rennes, the cradle of the so-called "analyse des données," where Jean Paul Benzécri figured out this method, where Brigitte Escofier wrote the first CA program and defended her thesis. All this took place in the early 1960s. This new CARME edition is the 50th anniversary of correspondence analysis, the 25th anniversary of canonical correspondence (CCA) and the 40th anniversary of the biplot. So, besides the latest advances on the subject as in previous editions, a special session is scheduled where the very first protagonists who played a major role in the history of correspondence analysis will give their testimonies. It is to some kind of scientific pilgrimage that Agrocampus invites you the 8-11 February 2011.

The last decade, the sociology of elites has received renewed and increasing attention from scholars. Across Europe, the trajectories that lead individuals to given elite positions, and the degree of intersectorial elite circulation, has proven to be subject to strong variation. This phd-course aims at adress both theoretical, methodological and empirical questions that typically arise in studies of social elites. The lectures will cover:
- sociological elite theories
- patterns of elite recruitment, reproduction and circulation
- visibility of elites and theories of elite distinction
- economic, cultural and professional elites

Bourdieu and Geometric Data Analysis

CALL FOR PAPERS

This is a Call for Papers for the above symposium/conference addressing the work of Pierre Bourdieu as represented through Geometric Data Analyses. The Symposium will be a featured strand of the International Classification Conference.

The Symposium will have a 4 hour slot each day dedicated to the presentation of papers, and ample time will be given to considering each one in detail. The Symposium will begin with discussion of Bourdieu’s theory of practice, what he set out to do, and the range of graphic representation used in his data analyses. We will include papers on Multiple Correspondence Analysis; both in studies which replicate areas of Bourdieu’s work and offer extensions and refinements of it.

Possible areas will include: Education/ Culture; Politics and Power/ Economics; Art and Aesthetics.

The idea is that participants will develop their own appreciation and expertise of theory and practice within a Bourdieusian perspective with respect to Geometric Data Analysis.

The Symposium will also offer a one-day Introductory Workshop on MCA prior to the Conference for those with less experience of it. The workshop will be led by Mike Grenfell, Frédéric Lebaron and Brigitte LeRoux

A large number of working groups are defined for the Nordic Sociological Conference 2011. Each of these groups accept paper presentations. One of the groups focuses on the sociology of elites: "Elites in modern societies".

Concepts like power, class and elite are usually founded on an assumption that society, the positions an individual occupies herein and the relations between individuals located in these positions, can be analysed as a multidimensional hierarchy, and where the elites are the ones located at the top of the relevant hierarchies. Across Europe, the trajectories that lead individuals to given elite positions, and the degree of intersectorial elite circulation, has proven to be subject to strong variation.

In this group, papers on a variety of research questions related to the sociology of elites will be presented. Topics will include:

- patterns of elite recruitment, reproduction and circulation
- theories of elite distinction
- elites and democracy
- elites, power and classes
- economic, cultural and professional elites
- elites and gender

We also welcome papers on other topics in the sociology of elites.

Social stratification, class analysis and class mobility

The course provides a theoretical approach to social stratification and power as well as analyses of specific classes.

John Scott and Fiona Devine will give lectures on the following topics.
There will also be sessions with contributions from attendees. A more detailed program will follow.

1) A theoretical approach to Social Stratification and Power

The session covers the argument on stratification and power as a reconceptualisation of a Weberian argument (on class and status) and
links this to recent work from Bourdieu on symbolic power as 'status'.

2) Conceptualising a working class: is there still a working class?

The session will look at how the theoretical ideas can be used to define a working class and will apply this to the British case, suggesting a
'rise and fall' of the working class over the period 1850-1960. Isssues are then raised about whether a similar process applies in other
societies. Attendees will be invited to talk about the use of the concept and approach for Norway and other societies with which they are familiar.

3) Working-class reproduction.

This session will look at the classic question of whether working class kids still get working class jobs as asked by Paul Willis nearly 30
years ago? It will address the relationship between class and educational attainment and draw on empirical research on young people's transitions from school into further education and employment.

4) Middle class or middle classes?

The session will consider ongoing discussions about the middle class and how it has changed over the twentieth century. It will consider the
extent to which a middle class of professional and high-level managers is economically, culturally and socially distinct from a wider mass middle class and the implications for understanding the class structure.

5) Conceptualising economic power and capitalist class formation

The session looks at ways of measuring economic power and assessing networks of economic power, the relationship of control to property ownership, and will be taking a comparative approach.

6) Social mobility and immobility.

The session will look at what social mobility is important and considers patterns and trends in the UK but also beyond. The current political debate in the UK about whether social mobility is declining raises important questions about what governments can or cannot do to `improve' social mobility.
