2020-01-22. SEC seminar
Seminar with Petter Sandgren, Department of Education, Stockholm University & Department of History and Civilization, European University Institute, Florence.
Time: Wednesday 22 Jan. 2020 at 13.15–15.00
Place: Uppsala University, Campus Blåsenhus, room 14:340 ("Tupprummet", third floor, near the coffee machines)
Petter Sandgren presents a chapter from his coming book Learning to Rule: The Transnational Field of Elite Boarding Schools. The objective of the presentation is to invite to a discussion on the possibilities and limitations of using 'transnational fields' as a research tool.
Book abstract
This book explores the global history of elite boarding schools from 1799 to the present time and reveals the previously neglected interconnected and dynamic nature of these schools and the elites they cater to. Drawing on primary sources from elite boarding schools in Australia, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, India, Sweden and the United States, this book challenges the conventional narrative of a one-way diffusion of the English elite ’public’ boarding school model to the rest of the world during the second half of the nineteenth century and onwards. It argues instead that the English public schools should be understood as part of a dynamic ‘transnational field’ of elite boarding schools that emerged during the first half of the nineteenth century. Within that transnational field, ideas of how future leaders should be educated would continue to diffuse and circulate across traditional national boundaries over the following two hundred years. The book’s global and long-term historical perspective, which captures continuity and change within this transnational educational and social field, will be invaluable for building a broader understanding of how independent boarding schools have so successfully produced such a disproportionate number of elites over the course of history, and to get a better sense of what type of leaders they produce.

2020-10-19 – 2020-10-20. Webinars
19—20 Oct. 2020
"The crisis of the university” is a familiar topos in contemporary discussions about higher education. It is said that the University is facing untold threats from, inter alia, the anti-intellectualism of populist politicians and authoritarian regimes, the commodification of knowledge resulting from neo-liberal ideas about utility and international competition, the politicization of teaching and learning arising out of identity movements, the fragmenting of the university in response to stakeholder demands, and so forth. This conference poses the question: Is this really the case? And, if so, what exactly is being threatened.

Time: 11–13 Nov 2020
Place: Humanistiska teatern, Uppsala universitet
During the past thirty years or so, the internationalization of higher education institutions has become a very significant issue on the agenda for policy-makers, academic leaders and researchers. Against this backdrop, it is timely to look closer at the conditions for internationalization and its effects. In so doing, the symposium will address questions such as the role of universities in a global world, international rankings, the mobility of ideas and students, costs and returns in internationalization as well as international branch campuses. An expert panel discussion will conclude the symposium, which is an Academia Europaea HERCulES event.
Arr: Academia Europea, HERO, SIHE

2020-11-17. Workshop
Time: Tuesday 17 Nov. 2020, at 09.15– 12.00
Place: The web platform Zoom
Language: English.
Space and place are important concepts in both sociological and geographical research. Despite the centrality of the concept within both disciplines, it is perceived and employed in different ways. For geographers, space and place are at the centre of the discipline and, indeed, generate various methodological and theoretical departures for understanding human behaviour in different places. Among sociologists, various understandings of space and place are to be found. In the Bourdieusian tradition, a spatial approach entails a relational understanding of social positions, hierarchies and distribution of resources, but simultaneously tend to disregard the importance of place.
A shared ground between the disciplines, however, is the relational inquiry of how structure and agency unfolds spatially.
In this one-day workshop, arranged by the interdisciplinary research network Studies on education, migration and segregation (EMS), we gather scholars who apply different spatial approaches in their research related to education, migration and/or segregation. The presentations should focus on research questions and specific ways to approach and investigate them. Preferably, the presentations should draw on empirical and analytical examples from earlier or ongoing studies.

Abstract
The stratification of speech rhythm in late-modern Stockholm
Dr. Nathan J. Young
Lecturer in Linguistics
Centre for Research on Bilingualism, Stockholm University
Stockholm is emblematically late-modern when considering liberalized school markets (Forsberg, 2018), housing segregation (Hedin et al., 2012), and superdiversity (Aktürk-Drake, 2018). As a consequence, stylistic practices that “do” class and race are on the rise (Matory, 2015; Milani & Jonsson, 2012; Ostberg, 2007). One such practice is förortssvenska (Suburban Swedish), the established variety of Stockholm’s racialized proletariat. Known by many as Rinkeby Swedish (Kotsinas, 1988), it is Europe’s earliest known multiethnolect (Clyne, 2000).
In this talk I discuss the variety’s staccato prosody and how the production of staccato – operationalized as low pairwise variability between vowels (Low et al., 2000) – correlates strongly with measurements of class, social network, age, and race. The data come from 36 Stockholmian men between the ages of 24 and 43 interviewed between 2015 and 2017. They hail from a stratified sample of classes and ethnicities, and all were born in Sweden or migrated here before the age of six, well within Lenneberg’s (1967) Critical Period of language acquisition. Seventeen self-identify as “svensk” (Swedish) and 19 as “invandrare” (immigrant) – lay terms that, according to Critical Race theorists, mean “white” and “non-white”, respectively (Hübinette et al., 2012).
The study’s key finding is that stratification of speech rhythm distributes horizontally rather than top-to-bottom, which is unusual for sociolectal variables. Non-white working-class speakers have the least pairwise variability, and white working-class speakers have the most; prosodic rhythm of elites falls in-between, regardless of racial identification. I propose that racial tension is a contributing social driver behind this linguistic development because actual contact between the two working classes is relatively high while contact between the elites and any working class is low.
A second finding is that younger non-white working-class speakers have less pairwise variability than their older counterparts. This division is not gradient; it distributes bimodally between speakers born before the late 1980s and those born after. Crucially also, younger speakers “achieve” staccato by expanding their unstressed vowels whereas older speakers achieve it by reducing phonologically-long vowels in stressed position. Since this defies typical expectations for migrant varieties (they typically become more normative generation after generation), I investigate the city’s sociological history for explanations. Younger speakers hit puberty – a pivotal age for linguistic innovation – in the early 2000s. In examining the development of late-modern phenomena like income stratification and school segregation, 2001 was a transformative year. I therefore propose a link between these late-modern social forces and the increased staccato prosody of förortssvenska.
